France condemns the shelling that endangered the lives of five monitors from the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission during the night of December 13 in Popasna, in the Luhansk region. The parties are required to safeguard the security of monitors under the mandate approved by 57 OSCE nations.
We are deeply concerned by the renewed intensity of fighting in eastern Ukraine, which has left 17 dead and 37 injured since early December.
France is working actively with Germany in the “Normandy format” to resolve the conflict. We call on all the parties, during the upcoming meeting of the Trilateral Contact Group in Minsk on December 20, to renew the ceasefire for Christmas. We ask in particular that Russia use its influence with the separatists to ensure that the ceasefire is fully respected.
