Q : What is your reaction to yesterday’s death of American journalist Brent Renaud in Ukraine?

A : As President Macron said yesterday, France expresses its deep sadness over the death of American journalist Brent Renaud on Sunday near Kiev. We condemn the attacks targeting journalists who are working – and sometimes risking their lives – to pass on the reliable information that is vital to the functioning of democracy. We offer all of his loved ones our most heartfelt condolences.

France reaffirms its staunch, unwavering commitment to press freedom, free speech and the protection of journalists and all those whose efforts contributes to free, pluralistic information and public debate worldwide.

This tragedy reminds us how extremely dangerous it is to be in Ukraine and highlights the specific risks connected with the work of the press during the war in that country.
