France was deeply saddened to learn of the death of British humanitarian worker Paul Urey on July 10, while he was being held by pro-Russian separatist forces in Donetsk. Paul Urey had been taken prisoner in April while he was in Ukraine.

The circumstances of his death must be investigated with the utmost transparency, and those responsible for his death must be held accountable.

We remind Russia and its proxies in Ukraine of their obligations toward prisoners of war and detainees, who must be treated in accordance with international humanitarian law.

France stands in total solidarity with the United Kingdom in these tragic circumstances, and we offer our deep sympathies to Paul Urey’s family.
