We are following with the utmost attention the situation of Turkish academics who are being harassed for signing a peace petition in January 2016.
We are particularly concerned about yesterday’s opening of the first court proceedings against signatories, including 25 teachers at Galatasaray University, established by a French-Turkish agreement in 1992. Our ambassador attended the hearings this morning in Istanbul.
France calls on Turkey to comply with its European and international commitments on human rights and fundamental liberties. It reiterates the value it attaches to academic freedom and proclaims its support for Galatasaray University, which is a key pillar of French-Turkish cooperation. Respect for the right to a fair trial and the promotion of an active, pluralistic civil society are vital components of every democracy.
