Turkey - Conversation between the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs and his Turkish counterpart (9 March 2026)
M. Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, had a telephone conversation with his counterpart from the Republic of Turkey, Mr Hakan Fidan.
The two ministers talked among other things about the recent interception, by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s defence systems, of a ballistic missile that penetrated Turkish airspace in the context of a military escalation linked to the conflict between Israel and Iran.
The Minister voiced France’s solidarity with Turkey in the face of any threat to the integrity of its territory and welcomed the action of the Alliance’s defence capabilities to protect Allied airspace. The two ministers also talked about the risks of regional escalation linked to the missile and drone attacks observed in several Middle Eastern countries.
Finally, they agreed to maintain close consultation to contribute to efforts aimed at de-escalation and preserving regional stability.
