Q : An amendment to the electoral law has just been passed in Tunisia. Certain provisions have been strongly criticized, since they may exclude candidates. Is this reform a step in the right direction?

A : The Assembly of the Representatives of the People of the Republic of Tunisia has passed an amendment to the electoral law. It is not up to France to express an opinion on this sovereign vote.

France reaffirms its support for Tunisia, a country that is a friend and special partner. It reaffirms its confidence in the Tunisian people and institutions and pays tribute to Tunisia’s democratic vitality, for which the general elections in the fall will constitute an important landmark.

France will participate in the EU Election Observation Mission and intends to continue to lend its full support to Tunisia, with due respect for its independence and its institutions.
