Q : In recent months, some have called into doubt the reporting of a colleague at the RFI concerning the existence of a letter that French President Emmanuel Macron sent to Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé on March 25, 2020. In his article of March 31, 2020, our colleague at the RFI revealed that in this letter of March 25, a few weeks after the presidential election in Togo on February 22, the French president conveyed his “best wishes for success” to his Togolese counterpart. Does this letter from the French President to the Togolese President exist or not?

A : The President did indeed send a letter to President Faure Gnassingbé following his election. These letters are gestures of international comity following the election of a Head of State.
