United Nations – Security Council – Syria (August 17, 2015)

France welcomes the adoption in New York of a UN Security Council Presidential Statement in support of a political transition process in Syria under the auspices of Staffan de Mistura, Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General.

The adoption of this text signals, for the first time in two years, the consensus of the Security Council and its five permanent members on the need to establish a transitional government with full executive powers, in accordance with the principles of the Geneva Communiqué. It also provided an opportunity to confirm our joint support for Staffan de Mistura’s efforts.

The bombing of the market in Douma on the eve of the adoption of this statement again demonstrated the urgent need for a political solution. France will support Staffan de Mistura’s efforts to implement this Security Council statement.
