Syria – U.S. sanctions against Syrian scientists (24 April 2017)

Following the unacceptable attack carried out on April 4 in Khan Sheikhoun, France welcomes the American decision to impose sanctions on 271 Syrian scientists working for the Scientific Studies and Research Center, which was involved in the development of chemical weapons.

France firmly denounced the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime and the horrors it entails. The use of chemical weapons violates the international commitments to which Syria subscribed by ratifying the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) which prohibits the development, production, stockpiling and use of this sort of weapon of mass destruction.

An investigation carried out by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) is underway in order to determine the circumstances of the attack in Khan Sheikhoun. We reaffirm our full support for the organization.
