Q : Yesterday a German court convicted a former member of the Syrian intelligence services for atrocities he committed in Syria. Is France also mobilizing its efforts to combat serious human rights violations in Syria?

A : We are fully committed to fighting impunity in Syria, a necessary and essential prerequisite to a political solution and lasting peace in that country. The serious violations of international humanitarian law and human rights must not go unpunished.

Several court proceedings are currently under way in France, and French and German judicial authorities are cooperating very actively in this area.

At the international level, France supports the provisions put in place by the UN, such as the Independent International Commission of Inquiry and the UN International Impartial Independent Mechanism (IIIM).
