Syria - Q&A - Excerpts from the daily press briefing (28 August 2017)

Q - What’s the meaning of a “specialist” contact group on Syria? Does it mean that it will no longer include the regime and the opposition, as the President announced earlier?

A - Last week, Jean-Yves Le Drian hosted Staffan de Mistura, the UN secretary-general’s special envoy for Syria, and reiterated our full support for his efforts to achieve a negotiated political solution, which implies negotiations between the opposition and the regime.

He also reaffirmed that a political solution in Syria must involve “the support of the United Nations, the permanent members of the United Nations, and the countries of the region.” It is precisely with this transition in mind that France advocates the establishment of a contact group. We are continuing our discussions on that subject with our partners, in coordination with Staffan de Mistura.
