Q - Is there a chance that the inter-Syrian peace process in Geneva can be restarted in the face of the Damascus regime’s obstruction strategy? What initiatives does France intend to take at the beginning of 2018 in order to relaunch it?
A - As President Macron indicated yesterday, in Syria we have to “build a political solution that will allow lasting peace, in which all minorities are protected.” He added that initiatives will be taken “in the process that France would like to see emerge at the beginning of next year.”
The inter-Syrian negotiations being conducted under the auspices of the UN in Geneva are the legitimate framework for achieving a political solution to the crisis.
Bashar al-Assad’s regime is responsible for the deadlock in the Geneva process, while the opposition succeeded in presenting a united front. As we have said previously, it is incumbent on the countries that support the regime to exert the necessary political pressure to ensure it engages in the talks in good faith.
In this regard, France reiterates its full support for the efforts led by U.N special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura.
