France is deeply troubled by information pointing to a chemical attack in Saraqeb, near Idlib, on August 1. Such an attack would be unacceptable and a violation of international law.
A fact-finding mission from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) had previously confirmed chlorine gas attacks on the Syrian people involving the use of helicopters operated only by Syrian regime forces.
France reiterates its support for the OPCW-UN Joint Investigative Mechanism. It will pay close attention to the conclusions that will be reached in late August on the alleged chemical attacks in 2014 and 2015.
The perpetrators of these attacks must be held accountable in accordance with UN Security Council resolution 2118, adopted on September 27, 2013.
