Syria – Air raids and civilian casualties (May 23, 2016)

In Syria, violence and attacks are exposing civilians to international humanitarian rights violations.

Today’s car bomb attacks by Daesh in Tartus, which left more than 100 dead, are despicable.

France also condemns the regime’s bombardment of civilian populations and medical infrastructures. Its continuing offensive against Aleppo, with the support of its allies, and its systematic blocking of humanitarian assistance, in violation of the commitments it undertook in Vienna on May 17, are unacceptable.

France calls for the immediate respect of the cessation of hostilities and free access to humanitarian assistance. The violence must stop to allow for the resumption of inter-Syrian negotiations on implementing the political transition, as Mr. Ban Ki-moon stated in Doha. The entire international community, beginning with the regime’s supporters, must work hard to ensure that UN Security Council resolutions and the commitments taken in Vienna are fully respected.
