Sudan – Formation of a new government (8 February 2021)

France welcomes yesterday’s formation of Sudan’s new transition government headed by Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok.

This latest step is a sign of major progress and directly follows on from the inter-Sudanese peace agreements signed in Juba last October, integrating former rebels from the Darfur, Blue Nile and South Kordofan regions into the Sovereign Council in order to lead Sudan toward democratic elections.

It must now be followed by the formation of a legislative body, which France is strongly calling for, to finalize the establishment of transitional institutions, as well as the continuation of economic reforms begun since the Sudanese revolution in 2018.

On this occasion, France reaffirms its strong resolve to support the Sudanese people throughout the current democratic transition. It reiterates that it will host a high-level conference in Paris to mobilize international support for the new Sudan on May 17, in keeping with President Macron’s pledge. France is pleased to organize this event in conjunction with the Sudanese authorities.
