Q - Following the imprisonment of eight “former ministers” in the Catalan government and the issuing of an arrest warrant for ousted president Carles Puigdemont, the path of dialogue between Catalonia and Spain has been blocked. The risk for confrontation is increasing and the threats to rights and freedoms are clear. In this context, and while Carles Puigdemont and part of his former government remain in Brussels, does France still believe that this is an internal matter and that we should rule out the possibility of European mediation?
A - The position of the French authorities is constant: This issue must be addressed within the framework of the Spanish Constitution.
We hope that the upcoming elections in Catalonia announced by the Spanish government will make it possible - as stated by Jean-Yves Le Drian - to return to the path of dialogue in an atmosphere of renewed calm and within a legal framework.
