Spain - Q&A - Excerpts from the daily press briefing (02.10.17)

Q - Following yesterday’s events in Catalonia, during which more than 800 people were injured on the day of the independence referendum, is the French government concerned about what might happen next, since a general strike is going to be called and the Catalan government may declare independence in the next few days? Would it be advisable to consider European mediation? Is France considering taking some sort of initiative in order to ease tensions in this country that is a friend and neighbor?

A - France is attached to the unity and integrity of Spain, a friendly country, whose voice is critical on the European stage.

We have taken note of the various statements issued on October 1, notably the proposal by the president of the Spanish government to launch joint discussions with all political forces represented in Parliament.

We have full confidence in the ability of the Spanish democracy to engage in a calm political dialogue, in accordance with constitutional law.
