France welcomes the formation of a transitional government of national unity in South Sudan, achieved through the compromise efforts of all the South Sudanese parties. This encouraging first step should make it possible to move resolutely forward toward a lasting peace in that country.
During the transition period that has just begun, the new government will have a crucial role to play in implementing the reforms agreed to in the revitalized peace agreement of 2018, particularly transitional justice, accountability, and the transparency of public finances.
France stands with the South Sudanese to support them in this new transition phase. It reaffirms its support for the efforts of the countries in the region, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the African Union to support the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.
