South Korea – Conversation between Franck Riester and Yoo Myung-hee, Minister of Trade (23 June 2021)

Franck Riester, Minister Delegate for Foreign Trade and Economic Attractiveness, attached to the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, spoke with Yoo Myung-hee, Minister of Trade of South Korea, on June 23.

The ministers discussed the measures taken by the two governments to overcome the pandemic, notably through the increased production of vaccines, support foreign trade, stimulate our economies, and facilitate the resumption of trade. They underscored the importance of strengthening the resilience of supply chains and responding to digital challenges. They also agreed to host a French-Korean business forum.

The minister delegate discussed the main challenges for bilateral trade relations in the agricultural and energy sectors, as well as with respect to new technologies. He reiterated France’s expectations regarding the rapid lifting of South Korea’s embargo on French beef. He also stressed the need for a gradual resumption of travel between France and South Korea, in accordance with health standards.

Lastly the two ministers reviewed the measures needed to strengthen the multilateral trade system and agreed on the importance of close cooperation between the EU and South Korea in the run-up to the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference due to take place at the end of the year, and in order to make progress on WTO reform.
