Q: What measures will France take after UN investigators announced they have proof that Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman was involved in the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi? The UN is recommending sanctions. France has always said it would wait for the investigation results. Will it impose sanctions on Saudi Arabia?
A: We learned of the publication of the UN special rapporteur’s report on summary and arbitrary extrajudicial killings, which are still under investigation.
From the beginning, France demanded that the facts be clearly established in this extremely serious case, and that all necessary investigations be completed – including those at the international level – and that those responsible be tried and punished. That is why we are closely following the judicial proceedings currently under way.
With regard to sanctions, on November 19 of last year, France adopted measures targeting 18 Saudi nationals suspected of involvement in the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi on October 2 in Istanbul.
These measures, decided on by the Ministry of the Interior, prevent those individuals from entering French territory and all of the Schengen area. They may be re-examined and expanded based on progress in the investigations under way.
