Q : The Saudi authorities have not given any indication that they would be ready to allow the investigations into the murder of Jamal Khashoggi to take on an international dimension; on the contrary, prosecutors will seek the death penalty for five of the eleven suspects tried for the journalist’s murder. Is there a risk that your call for a clear indication of responsibility and for the perpetrators to be held accountable within the framework of a proper trial may not be heard without a more aggressive response on the part of the international community?

A: France’s position is constant.

We expect the Saudi authorities to provide a transparent, comprehensive and credible response to the questions relating to the investigation into the murder of Jamal Khashoggi.

We are calling for the facts to be clearly established in this extremely serious case and for the perpetrators to be tried and punished. This is why we are closely following the ongoing criminal proceedings in Saudi Arabia.

France is opposed to the death penalty everywhere and under all circumstances.
