France congratulates the Russian opposition leader Vladimir Kara-Murza on receiving the Václav Havel Human Rights Prize. By honoring him with this distinction, the Council of Europe recognizes his exceptional commitment to respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in Russia. France hails the courage displayed by Mr. Kara-Murza, who voiced his opposition to the war of aggression against Ukraine. Since April, he has continued fighting for peace from prison after being arrested by his country’s authorities. We assure him and his family of our complete solidarity.

France calls on the Russian authorities to comply with their international human rights commitments and to release and exonerate Mr. Kara-Murza as well as all of the political prisoners being detained in Russia.
