Jean-Marc Ayrault, French Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, met with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, today to extend his deepest condolences and to assure him of France’s support and solidarity following the heinous attack on St Petersburg on 3 April 2017.
The Minister underlined the need for a united international community to combat this terrorism, which has struck both of our countries. He recalled that France stood ready to meet any request from the Russian Federation for assistance.
The two Ministers also talked about the situation in Ukraine. Jean-Marc Ayrault called upon the Russian Federation to fully commit to supporting the ceasefire that was recently renewed in Ukraine, which should enable the current Normandy format talks to continue with regard to the implementation of the Minsk Agreements.
Lastly, with regard to Syria, Jean-Marc Ayrault expressed France’s condemnation of the chemical attack in Khan Sheikhoun. He stated that this barbaric act cannot go unpunished and recalled that the international community as a whole had to shoulder its responsibilities and work to determine the facts and who was responsible.
