Russia – Human rights – Law on foreign agents (September 7, 2016)

France learned of the Russian justice ministry’s decision to include the Levada Center on the list of “foreign agents,” which is causing its director to suspend its activities. The Levada Center is internationally renowned for the high quality of its studies.

More than 140 Russian civil society organizations have been affected by procedures since this law came into force in 2012. We also express our concern following the inspection on September 5 of the international branch of the universally respected NGO Memorial, which could lead to it being designated as a “foreign agent.”

We stress the importance we ascribe to fundamental liberties, notably the freedom of association, opinion, and expression, throughout the world.
