Qatar – Question & Answer (30 June 2017)

Q&A - Excerpts from the daily press briefing

Q - On May 3, France reaffirmed its commitment to the freedom of the press and freedom of expression throughout the world. Do you think the demands of Qatar’s neighbors to shut down Al-Jazeera correspond to your expectations with regard to the freedom of the press?

A - As we have noted over the past few days, France believes that tensions must be resolved through dialogue and cooperation among the Arab countries of the Gulf. All of them must make the necessary gestures to that end.

Kuwait is continuing to act as mediator and we reiterate our support for it. In this connection, Jean-Yves Le Drian has hosted Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, Kuwait’s minister of foreign affairs and the emir’s emissary in this mediation effort.

As for freedom of the press, France is committed to defending this freedom throughout the world. Media pluralism, the right to inform and to be informed, and the ability to express critical views are vital to democratic debate.
