Portugal - Conversation between Franck Riester and the Portuguese minister of foreign affairs (Nov. 20)

Franck Riester, Minister Delegate for Foreign Trade and Economic Attractiveness, attached to the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, is meeting today via video conference with Augusto Santos Silva, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal.
This conversation, which will focus on foreign trade issues, is taking place in the context of the Portuguese presidency of the Council of the European Union during the first half of 2021 and in preparation for the French presidency of the Council of the European Union during the first half of 2022. It will notably focus on the review of the EU’s trade policy and on the main ongoing issues, with the goal of strengthening European resiliency and ensuring greater alignment between the EU’s trade and environmental policies.
The ministers will also discuss trans-Atlantic trade relations in the context of the recent election of Joe Biden as president of the United States and the response to the environmental concerns raised by the draft agreement between the EU and the Mercosur countries.
The meeting will provide an opportunity to discuss the efforts to rebalance EU-China economic and trade relations, following on from the conclusions of the European Council in October, notably with respect to reciprocity, market access and a level playing field, as well as sustainable development and investment protection.
The ministers will discuss the challenges related to WTO reform, in the context of the deadlock.
