Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, spoke today by phone with his Norwegian counterpart, Ine Eriksen Soreide.
The minister congratulated his counterpart on Norway’s election to the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member for 2021 and 2022. He expressed our country’s desire to cooperate closely with Norway on issues relating to peace and international security in this context. The ministers discussed the situation in the Sahel, Libya, the Gulf and the Middle East - crises regarding which we have converging approaches.
Jean-Yves Le Drian and his counterpart also took stock of the international response to the Covid-19 crisis. They discussed the coordination of the lifting of restrictions of movement at the internal and external borders of the Schengen Area and the establishment of the Inclusive Vaccine Alliance in which Norway has confirmed it wants to participate.
The ministers also decided to continue their discussions on Ukraine and Russia, EU-China relations and the negotiations on the future relationship between the UK and the EU, underscoring the need to preserve our two countries’ reciprocal fishing interests.
