France condemns in the strongest possible terms last night’s launch by North Korea of a ballistic missile over Japanese territory. It reiterates its solidarity with its Asian partners.
The North Korean regime’s nuclear and ballistic program, conducted in violation of its international obligations, threatens the security of countries of the region and the international community.
This program demands a stalwart response by the international community to preserve the non-proliferation regime, legal norms, and international peace and security. This issue will be discussed at the UN General Assembly.
The Security Council unanimously demonstrated its determination in the face of North Korean launches and tests by adopting a new package of sanctions on September 11 (resolution 2375). It will hold an urgent meeting today to address the consequences of this latest North Korean provocation.
In the face of this threat, France is prepared to work – particularly within the UN Security Council and the European Union – to strengthen measures to convince the Pyongyang regime that escalation is not at all in its interest and to bring it to the negotiating table.
