North Korea – Firing of ballistic missiles (March 6, 2017)

France condemns the firing of four ballistic missiles by North Korea on March 6, in violation of the UN Security Council resolutions, which fell in or near Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

We call on North Korea to immediately comply with its international obligations and to ensure the complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantlement of its nuclear and ballistic programs.

France reaffirms its solidarity with its partners in the region, especially South Korea and Japan, whose security is threatened by North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic program.

We call on the international community to take immediate action to prevent North Korea from having an operational nuclear arsenal and to safeguard the non-proliferation regime. We are in contact with our partners, especially the permanent members of the Security Council, Japan and South Korea in order to develop a firm and resolute response. This response notably requires efforts to strengthen the implementation by all states of UNSCR 2270 and UNSCR 2321 and the swift adoption of new restrictive measures by the EU.
