North Korea – Adoption by the UN Security Council of a resolution strengthening sanctions (5 August 2017)

France welcomes the unanimous adoption on August 5, 2017, of UNSCR 2371 condemning the ballistic missile tests carried out in July by North Korea and strengthening the sanctions regime against it.

UNSCR 2371 notably imposes a complete ban on the export of several North Korean products, including coal, lead and iron ore and fishery products.

It also bans all countries from hiring additional North Korean workers, whose revenue will be used by North Korea to support the prohibited nuclear and ballistic missile programs. In addition, the text bans the creation of new joint ventures with North Korean entities as well as additional investment in existing ones and adds new sanctions designations against individuals and entities. UNSCR 2371 also specifies new measures to strengthen the implementation of existing sanctions.

France again urges North Korea to immediately comply with its international obligations and to dismantle its nuclear and ballistic missile programs in a complete, verifiable, and irreversible manner, and remains fully committed to achieving this goal.
