G5 Sahel – Inauguration of the command post of the Joint Force’s Central Sector (Niamey, 8 November 2017)

On 8 November, coinciding with the first operation conducted by the G5 Sahel Joint Force, the Central Sector command post was inaugurated in Niamey by Mr Kalla Moutari, Niger’s Minister of Defence, in the presence of the French Ambassador and the G5 Sahel military authorities of Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali.

This first operation, codenamed Hawbi, has involved the forces of Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali in the tri-border region, supported by the French forces of Operation Barkhane. It has provided an opportunity to show that the G5 Sahel Joint Force is now operational and engaged in combating terrorism in a practical way. It has been conducted from the Niamey command post created, built and equipped in the space of only six months.

By providing the bulk of the technical equipment and significant human back-up, France, with the support of Operation Barkhane, has played a driving role in boosting this command post and in the Joint Force’s operational implementation.
