Myanmar – Signing of the tripartite agreement between Myanmar, the UNDP and the UNHCR on the return of Rohingya refugees to Rakhine State (6 June 2018)
France welcomes the agreement concluded today between Myanmar’s civilian government, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the UN Development Program (UNDP).
This tripartite agreement is an important step toward preparing the conditions necessary for the safe, voluntary, dignified and sustainable return of the Rohingya refugees. It is consistent with the statement made by the President of the Security Council on November 6, 2017 and the press statement issued by the Security Council on May 9.
In this respect, France continues to support the work of the UN and the humanitarian organizations on the ground.
France calls on the Burmese authorities to fully cooperate with Christine Schraner Burgener, the new Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Myanmar, and to implement all of the recommendations provided in the Kofi Annan Commission report, as they pledged to do so, in order to address the root causes of the crisis.
France reaffirms its support for Burma’s democratic transition and for the efforts of the government led by Aung San Suu Kyi to advance the rule of law and respect for human rights and civil liberties in Myanmar
