Myanmar – Sentencing on appeal of two Myanmar reporters working for the news agency Reuters (11 January 2019)
France deplores the sentencing on appeal to seven years in prison of two Reuters reporters, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, who were arrested in 2017 while researching a report on serious allegations of human rights violations in Rakhine State.
This sentence represents a serious attack on the freedom of the press and the rule of law in Myanmar.
France hopes that the Myanmar authorities will explore every possible avenue to ensure the swift release of these two journalists.
It reaffirms its constant commitment to the freedom of the press and the freedom of expression. Respect for these freedoms is one of the foundations of any democratic society.
