Myanmar – Sentencing of two Reuters journalists (2 September 2018)

France deplores the sentencing today of two journalists from the Reuters news agency, Mr Wa Lone and Mr Kyaw Soe Oo, to seven years in prison. They were arrested in December 2017 as they were preparing a report on serious allegations of human rights violations in Rakhine State.

These sentences are a serious attack on freedom of the press and the rule of law in Burma.

France repeats its call for their release and for their fundamental rights to be respected, and for the media to be given free access to Rakhine State. It reaffirms its steadfast commitment to freedom of the press and freedom of expression. Respecting these freedoms is a foundation of any democratic society.
