Myanmar – Release of Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo (7 May 2019)
Reuters journalists Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo were released this morning as part of an amnesty announced by the president of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. These journalists had been arrested in December 2017, and then sentenced to seven years in prison.
France, which had called on the Myanmar authorities to release them, welcomes this decision.
France reaffirms its support for the democratic transition in Myanmar and for the efforts of the civilian government to advance the rule of law and respect for human rights.
Press freedom is one of the cornerstones of any democratic society. Journalists must be able to carry out their work freely, without fear of being intimidated or arrested.
