Myanmar/ Burma - Q&A - Excerpts from the daily press briefing (11.09.2017)

Q - Does France have confidence in the ability of the Burmese authorities to protect the Rohingya community?

A - We have repeatedly expressed our deep concern at the violence against as well as the forced displacement of the populations of Rakhine State, notably those belonging to the Rohingya community.

We call for the cessation of violence and call on the Burmese security forces to ensure the protection of the civilian populations and their property and to guarantee the restoration of safe humanitarian access. We reaffirm our support for the work of the humanitarian organizations on the ground, which are providing assistance and protection to all civilian populations. We are helping the French NGOs, in addition to France’s voluntary contribution to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

We encourage the Burmese government to seek solutions to promote peace and reconciliation and take note of its commitment to implementing the recommendations of the Advisory Commission on Rakhine State chaired by Kofi Annan. We urge it take immediate and decisive action in this direction.
