France condemns in the strongest possible terms the new prison sentence handed down against State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.

This decision is the latest example of the junta’s manipulation of the law against those who were legitimately elected by the Burmese people. The military tribunals’ appropriation of the courts is a very serious attack on basic rights and further undermines the rule of law in Burma. The use of such proceedings against Burmese and foreign citizens is contrary to the goal of a swift, peaceful, negotiated end to the crisis that includes all stakeholders, and which the international community has been calling for.

France reiterates its call for the immediate, unconditional release of all those who are being arbitrarily detained, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint. We maintain our support for efforts by ASEAN and its special envoy, and by the UN Secretary-General’s special envoy, and emphasize once again that instituting a political dialogue that includes the democratic opposition is a crucial prerequisite for any resolution to the crisis.
