Following the coup d’état of 1 February, France remains deeply concerned about the worsening situation in Burma/Myanmar, with the growing use of violence against peaceful demonstrators and the deployment of armoured vehicles in several towns and cities in the country.

The attacks on freedom of expression and press freedom are extremely worrying. France calls on the security forces to restore access to communications networks as quickly as possible.

France strongly condemns the arbitrary arrests and imprisonments that have been taking place since the coup d’état. It recalls the Human Rights Council’s demand, in its 12 February resolution, for the immediate and unconditional release of all those people held arbitrarily, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Min Myint, and for the ending of the state of emergency.

In coordination with its European and international partners, France will continue to support the Burmese people in their fight for democracy and the rule of law.
