France is mobilizing its efforts to help the people of Rakhine State (Burma/Myanmar)

France is contributing €2.3 million to the international effort to meet the needs of the people of Rakhine State.

France has decided to allocate €300,000 to the humanitarian emergency in Rakhine State. This aid, which supplements France’s support for French NGOs on the ground, is intended to meet the needs of internally displaced people and those affected by the violence.

France is also providing food aid to the people of Rakhine State – €865,000 in 2017.

France has also directed more than €250,000 euros in 2017 – part of its annual voluntary contribution to the High Commissioner for Refugees (HCR) – to benefit stateless and displaced persons in Rakhine State.

And finally, France is providing €900,000 in 2017 to support the arrival of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, including €300,000 for scheduled food aid via a contribution to the World Food Programme (WFP).

Humanitarian aid from the European Union

The EU is one of the major providers of humanitarian aid in Burma (and France is the second-largest net contributor to the EU budget).

During his visit to Burma on May 15, European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides announced €12 million in financing for Burma, 5.2 million of which has already been allocated to provide sanitation and food aid to the people of Rakhine State. The EU is also providing €3.8 million to welcome refugees in Bangladesh for 2017. In addition, on September 12, the EU decided to put in place a supplementary financial aid of 3 million euros to support displaced Rohingyas persons.
