Mexico – Visit by Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian (31 October - 2 November 2017)

Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian will be in Mexico from October 31 to November 2. He will be hosted by the President of the United Mexican States, Enrique Peña Nieto, and will meet with his counterpart, Luis Videgaray, with whom he will sign a joint declaration strengthening the strategic partnership between our two countries.

The two ministers will open the meeting of the Franco-Mexican Strategic Council established in 2013 at the behest of the French President and his Mexican counterpart. This council brings together figures from the economic, scientific, political, cultural, and academic communities of both countries. It makes concrete, innovative proposals aimed at strengthening our bilateral relationship, particularly in the economic and environmental spheres.

Mr. Le Drian will meet with representatives of French companies in Mexico, whose presence continues to grow, with more than 550 businesses or branches. He will discuss with them the opportunities for expanding trade with Mexico as part of the updated agreement between that country and the EU. He will visit the incubator of the French company NUMA, a symbol of the growing role of innovation in our economic relations. Established in early 2016, this incubator plans to host some 40 French startups each year.

The minister will express France’s solidarity with Mexico following September’s earthquakes. France will offer support to Mexico in the implementation of reconstruction programs, notably through the efforts of the French Development Agency.

During the “France and Mexico, Together for Education” ceremony attended by the Mexican education minister, Mr. Nuño Mayer, Mr. Le Drian will present aid to students and teachers of the Suave Patria school, which was severely damaged by the earthquake. Two agreements will be signed on that occasion, including a letter of intent to establish a bilingual technological university in Monterrey.

Finally, the minister will meet with Mexican Tourism Minister Enrique de la Madrid at a time when tourism between our two countries is experiencing a strong increase.
