France strongly condemns the murder, on May 15 in the state of Sinaloa, of journalist Javier Valdez, founder of the Riodoce news site who also worked for the national paper La Jornada and AFP.

Mr. Valdez is the fifth journalist to be murdered in Mexico this year.

We offer our condolences to Mr. Valdez’s loved ones and applaud the courage of journalists who risk their lives to bear witness and provide information.

France calls on the Mexican authorities to do everything in their power to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous crime do not go unpunished.

We reiterate our commitment to the freedom of the press and the protection of journalists throughout the world.
