Mauritania – Conviction of anti-slavery activists (August 20, 2015)

Share

We took note of the upholding of the conviction of anti-slavery activists in Mauritania.

France welcomes the efforts by human rights defenders in Mauritania, particularly those who are fighting to end slavery. The law adopted on August 13 by the Mauritanian Parliament that strengthens penalties against slavery is an important step forward and must be implemented.

We reiterate our commitment to the freedom of expression, association, and peaceful demonstration and to respect for the rights of defense and to a fair trial guaranteed by the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, ratified by Mauritania.
