Jean-Marc Ayrault, will visit Mauritania today. He will then travel to Mali on April 7, accompanied by his German counterpart, Sigmar Gabriel.
In Mauritania, he will meet with President Ould Abdel Aziz as well as his counterpart Izid Bih, whom he already met in Paris in October.
These meetings will provide an opportunity to take stock of our bilateral relations and of regional issues, in which Mauritania plays an important role. The minister will also meet French business leaders and representatives of Mauritanian civil society. This visit will provide an opportunity to lend support to the security and defense efforts of the G5 Sahel; the minister will visit the permanent secretariat of this organization.
In Mali, in Gao, the minister and his German counterpart will pay tribute to Corporal Julien Barbé who sacrificed his life in the fight against terrorism. In Bamako, during their meeting with President Keita, they will discuss efforts to build on recent progress with respect to implementing the peace agreement. They will express the support of France and Germany for Mali in the fight against terrorism and with respect to ensuring a lasting return to peace.
