The holding of local elections in Mali on November 20 is an important milestone in the country’s democratic life. It pays tribute to the mobilization of the Malian authorities supported by Mali’s partners, notably MINUSMA, despite the logistical and security challenges, especially in the northern part of the country.
France condemns the terrorist attacks against the Malian forces on the sidelines of the electoral process and extends its condolences to the victims’ families and the authorities. It reaffirms that the interim authorities are eligible to be appointed in the areas where it was not possible to conduct the elections under satisfactory conditions.
Lastly, France reaffirms its attachment to the full implementation of the Algiers agreement to ensure a return to lasting peace and the re-establishment of the rule of law in northern Mali.
