We were extremely shocked to learn of the death yesterday of two German soldiers serving in MINUSMA. They were killed when their helicopter crashed in the Gao region.
We extend our condolences to the victims’ families as well as to the German authorities and assure them of France’s support at this difficult time.
Germany has been involved in MINUSMA since February 2013 and now contributes almost 1,000 troops. Its presence was strengthened in December 2015 following the attacks in Paris and the invocation by France of article 42.7 of the Treaty of the European Union which provides for a mutual defense clause in the event that a member state is the victim of armed aggression on its territory.
This commitment is a strong testament to the friendship between our two countries and our determination to work together to combat terrorism and ensure the stability of the Sahel region.
