Libya – Q&A from the press briefing (28 Dec. 2020)

Q. Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar called on his forces to take up arms again to “drive out the Turkish occupier” from Libya. What do you think of those remarks at a time when negotiations are under way to try to end the deadlock in that country?

A.
There is no military solution in Libya. The priority is the implementation of the October 23rd ceasefire, which provides for the departure of foreign forces and mercenaries, as well as the continuation of the political process under the authority of the UN. We call on all Libyan stakeholders to support this process, to refrain from any resumption of hostilities, and to focus on choosing a new executive and organizing the elections scheduled for December 24, 2021, as decided by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum under the auspices of the UN.
