Libya – Q&A from the press briefing (28 Apr. 2020)

Q. What is your response to the announcement by General Haftar in Libya that he is withdrawing from the political agreement that led to the formation of the Libyan government and declaring that the army will take control, while promising to continue the offensive against Tripoli?

A. The only way to resolve the Libyan conflict is through dialogue between the parties under UN auspices, not through unilateral decisions. There is no alternative to an inclusive political solution, within the framework of the conclusions of the Berlin conference.

In the short term, the priority is to put an end to the fighting in Libya, in the context of the current health crisis. France reiterates its call, made together with its European partners and in cooperation with the UN, for a humanitarian truce during the month of Ramadan.

We reaffirm our support for the efforts of the UN secretary-general, and hope that his new special representative for Libya will be swiftly appointed in order to facilitate the resumption of dialogue between the parties.

France reaffirms its attachment to Libya’s sovereignty, unity and stability, and to respect for the arms embargo in the country.
