Libya - Q&A from the press briefing (22 June 2020)

Q: Egypt is threatening to intervene militarily in Libya, evoking legitimate self-defense and the support of the Libyan Parliament based in the eastern part of the country. Would such an intervention be acceptable under international law and would you support it?

A: France lent its full support to the political initiative presented by Egypt on June 6, as well as Egyptian efforts on that basis aimed at an immediate end to hostilities, the swift conclusion of a ceasefire within the framework of the 5+5 Libyan Joint Military Commission, monitoring, and a fair allocation of Libyan resources, as well as the resumption of the inter-Libyan political dialogue.

To contribute to these goals, France is working with Egypt, its European partners and its main international partners to revive the political process in Libya under the auspices of the UN and within the parameters agreed to at the Berlin conference.

Libya’s stability and the fight against terrorism in that country are key to the security of its regional environment, Libya’s neighbors and Europe. They require a sustainable restoration of calm on the ground and an inclusive political solution.
