The Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs spoke this morning with his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukry. He congratulated Mr. Shoukry on Egypt’s efforts with regard to Libya and lauded today’s result aimed at an immediate halt to hostilities, the resumption of negotiations in the framework of the 5+5 Libyan Joint Military Commission and the swift conclusion of a ceasefire providing for the departure of foreign mercenaries from Libya.

He expressed our support for the goal of resuming the political process on this basis, under the auspices of the UN and in line with the parameters agreed to at the Berlin conference. Lastly, he underscored the importance of unifying Libyan institutions, including financial institutions, and the holding of parliamentary and presidential elections.

The Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs expressed his determination to contribute to all of these goals, in keeping with the French efforts that led to the announcement that negotiations would be resumed within the 5+5 Commission framework. He emphasized that the priority must be an immediate halt to hostilities and the swift conclusion of a ceasefire agreement.
