Q : According to the UN, fighting in Libya has so far killed 121 people and injured 561 others. In addition, the UN estimates that 13,625 people have fled. Calls for a ceasefire have for now not been heeded. Is France considering a strong initiative in order to put pressure on the actors on the ground?
A : France is taking action through the bilateral channels as well as through the UN Security Council, the EU and the G7 in order to bring about a ceasefire in Libya. It calls on all parties to the conflict to immediately cease hostilities, ensure respect for international humanitarian law and resume political dialogue.
As the minister for Europe and foreign affairs reaffirmed on April 6, following the meeting of the G7 foreign ministers, there can be no military solution in Libya. We fully support the efforts of Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General Ghassan Salamé to relaunch the political process.
